🎿 Is Winter Finally Here? — For Our Slopes and Our Water Supply ❄️
Winter in Utah has delivered plenty of blue-bird days this season—perfect for sun lovers and those who enjoy winter sunshine—but the story behind the sunshine is a little more serious. As of early February, Utah’s snowpack is sitting at roughly one-third of its normal level for this time of year, with statewide snow water equivalent (SWE) averaging around 5.1 inches — the lowest on record since the SNOTEL monitoring system began in 1980.
Even more concerning: 31 of Utah’s 140 SNOTEL snowpack monitoring stations are reporting their lowest eversnow-water levels for this date, with another dozen showing the second-lowest levels in history.
This shortfall matters far beyond ski conditions. Nearly all of Utah’s water supply – for cities, farms, industry, and ecosystems – comes from mountain snowmelt, and low snowpack now means less potential water flowing into reservoirs and rivers this spring and summer.
❄️ Why February & March Matter
Historically, February and March deliver some of the most snowfall of the winter season here in the Wasatch and surrounding ranges. If we see significant storms during these months, they can help rebuild this snowpack deficit and improve summer water prospects. While above-normal temperatures have dominated much of winter, a shift back to colder storms with snow instead of rain would be a welcome turn.
That said, water managers caution that even with a strong late-season push, it’s unlikely to fully erase the deficit — making every storm worth celebrating, not just for powder turns on Powder Mountain, but for the water it stores for later. SOURCE

Here are the best opportunities for storms that could help both powder fans and water outlooks:
Feb 10–11: Light to moderate snow possible — great for fresh tracks.
Feb 14–15: Another chance for accumulating snowfall.
Feb 17: Looks most promising for significant snow & powder turns.
Even if these storms don’t fully close the snowpack gap, they can significantly boost local mountain SWE and improve runoff potential later. ❄️
